Lorelei,
In 2017, the Army Corps of Engineers under Trump granted the deciding permit allowing the Dakota Access pipeline to be built. Now, they are about to decide on the same permit for the Line 3 pipeline in my state of Minnesota.
We have less than a week to collect a huge number of public comments demanding the Army Corps of Engineers deny federal permits for the Line 3 tar sands pipeline.
A national wave of opposition is extremely important right now. Just four days after Minnesota's new Governor Tim Walz was inaugurated, he announced that he would re-evaluate the state's lawsuit against the Line 3 pipeline.1 Canceling the lawsuit would be a clear violation of his campaign promise to take "bold" action on climate.
While the fight continues in the Minnesota courts, there are still outstanding federal permits that are needed to move this project forward. This tar sands pipeline would be a disaster for our climate, our water, and Indigenous rights. No permits should be granted for the Line 3 pipeline.
Tell the Army Corps to deny the permit for Line 3 by submitting a public comment now.
If built, Line 3 would cross 211 bodies of water, including lakes, wetlands, and rivers.2 This permit would grant Enbridge, the company behind the project, the right to cross these waterways, endangering freshwater resources and wild rice lakes.
We've been fighting this pipeline for years, and our movement has only grown stronger. The climate science, treaty rights, and economics clearly show that this pipeline would harm sacred sites and push our climate further into crisis. We must show that there is a vocal majority across the country who oppose this dirty energy project.
It's unacceptable that Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan – who ran on promises of climate action – are considering reversing the important step outgoing Governor Dayton took to protect Minnesota. In the coming weeks we will continue to mount public pressure on them to do the right thing.
Our communities and the climate are more valuable than the profits of a dirty energy company. With your help, we can make sure that message is loud and clear.
With thanks,
Andy
