Lorelei -- With the climate crisis worsening by the day, we need our politicians to push for truly bold climate policies. Yet, Washington state's marquee climate bill started the session far from bold―if passed, the bill would ensure that our electricity is 100% clean by 2045. But the climate science is clear: We need to fully decarbonize long before 2045.
That's why we were very excited to hear that Representative Strom Peterson will be introducing an amendment to the 100% bill that would mean our electricity grid is wholly fossil free by 2035, a full ten years earlier!
The amendment could be voted in as early as today at 3:00pm. Can you take five minutes to call House Environment Committee members to ask them to vote Yes on Rep. Peterson's amendment?
The key legislators to call are: Chair Joe Fitzgibbon, phone: 360-786-7952, email: joe.fitzgibbon@leg.wa.gov Rep. Jake Fey, phone: 360-786-7974, email: jake.fey@leg.wa.gov Rep. Debra Lekanoff, phone: 360-786-7800, email: debra.lekanoff@leg.wa.gov Rep. Jared Mead, phone: 360-786-7892, email: jared.mead@leg.wa.gov Rep. Sharon Shewmake, phone: 360-786-7854, email: sharon.shewmake@leg.wa.gov Call script: "Hello, I'm calling Rep. [NAME] because they sit on the House Environment and Energy Committee. I know they support HB 1211, the 100% Clean Electricity bill, but the Senate version of the bill has been weakened, so I'm urging Rep. [NAME] to make the House version stronger by supporting the amendment being offered by their colleague on the committee, Rep. Strom Peterson. The Peterson amendment tightens the compliance timeline while providing the utilities protection against being over-penalized. It's effective, reasonable and fair. Will you pass this message on to Rep. [NAME]? Thank you!"
Once you've made your calls, please take two minutes to fill out this form to register your calls and let us know how they went. Don't worry if these aren't your legislators. As committee members, they're working for all Washingtonians.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these calls. Collectively, we hope to make over 100 calls today and let our legislators know that Washington supports bold, meaningful climate policy. Thank you for making your voice heard ― and for taking the time to let us know how your calls go! In solidarity,
David
