Lorelei,
I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the most important political moment for climate justice we've had in the United States in 10 years.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey introduced resolutions calling for a Green New Deal earlier this month, which is amazing enough already — but what really blows my mind is that the resolutions have ninety-five co-sponsors between the House and Senate. And that number just keeps growing.
This momentum didn't come from the top down. It came from the grassroots — from young leaders involved in groups like Sunrise Movement, and from people like you.
The Green New Deal we're fighting for would tackle the climate crisis, create millions of family-sustaining jobs, jump-start the transition away from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy, and fight racial and economic injustice by investing first and foremost in communities who have been harmed the most by the fossil fuel economy.
This bold climate plan is overwhelmingly popular among voters, and presidential candidates are paying attention: at least eight of the Democrats vying to beat Trump in 2020 have already come out in full-throated support of a Green New Deal.
I know we have a long fight ahead, especially as long as Trump and his fossil-fueled friends are still in power in the White House and the Senate.
But we need to keep taking action now to make sure that we don't just beat Trump in 2020 — we also get real, progressive climate leaders ready to take bold action for the climate and our communities, starting on Day One. Our actions now can make the Green New Deal not just possible, but inevitable.
We're going to win,
Devyn
