You have a dilemma next Friday night!

Lorelei --

350 Seattle's Pledge of Resistance team is hosting German anti-coal activists from Ende Gelände here in Seattle on Friday, February 22nd at 7pm at UW's CMU 120. They'll be sharing their stories about planning successful mass mobilizations to end coal mining in Germany.  This event will sell out -- get your tickets here today (free and donation options)!

Over the last ten years, a strong and diverse radical climate justice movement has been growing in Germany, founded on principles of frontline struggles, mass mobilization, direct action, and cooperation across organizational and tactical differences. The last few years saw the emergence of Ende Gelände mass mobilizations for civil disobedience; 6,000 people collectively blocked coal infrastructure last fall. Wearing their emblematic white coveralls, demonstrators invaded mining pits, danced in front of the diggers, slept on the railways, and provoked pictures that have raised attention globally by exposing the dirty truth behind the official tale of the German energy transition Energiewende, and making the connection between climate chaos and capitalism. Join us if you can!

BUT ALSO ON FRIDAY...you have 2 opportunities to support the Green New Deal!

Mitch McConnell and the fossil fuel billionaires he works for are scared of our movement. McConnell announced this week that he's bringing the Green New Deal resolution to a vote in the Senate. He's calling this vote before we've had much time to build support in the Senate because he wants to destroy the momentum for the Green New Deal. We intend to make him regret it.

This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. We don't expect to win this vote, but the more senators who vote for the Green New Deal resolution, the more influential the ideas in the resolution will be.

Join us for a youth-organized People's Town Hall for a Green New Deal with Senators Cantwell and Murray. The youth advocates of the Sunrise Movement's Seattle Hub have issued a formal People's Summons to the senators—our public servants—urging them to attend and hear why it's important to us that they vote for the Green New Deal resolution.

  • The People's Town Hall for a Green New Deal will be next Friday, February 22 from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Next week is a Congressional recess, so we expect the senators to join either in person or by video call. If the senators choose not to face us, we'll proceed with the meeting, and share the video with the senators' staff and local media. All ages welcome! Facebook event.
  • Can't make it to the Town Hall? There are also office visits late on Friday morning, 11am-12pm at the Federal Building 915 2nd Ave Seattle WA 98104. And there are more ways to help down below!

Whichever you do, next Friday is a great opportunity to dive in to meaningful climate action. We promise that it's much better than beer or a movie—don't miss it!

In solidarity,
The Pledge team, and the Green New Deal team

Other ways to help the Green New Deal gain momentum:

Take 15 minutes to write letters to the editors of local papers about why you support the Green New Deal resolution. The letters to the editor section is the second-most widely read section of the newspaper, and politicians and their staff read it to track their constituents' concerns. The more letters we submit, the more likely it is one will get published. Talking points here.

Call or tweet the senators using this online tool. At our action at Senator Cantwell's office this week, Cantwell's Seattle staff claimed that there's been a low call volume about the Green New Deal. Let's change that! Please ask the senators to attend the People's Town Hall for a Green New Deal in your letters to the editor, calls, and tweets.
