Hear from local organizers working with the Sunrise Movement in pursuit of a national plan to transition to 100% renewables and provide a federal jobs guarantee at the same time; be inspired by this powerful youth-led movement; get updates on the most recent congressional shenanigans, and get connected to work here on the ground in Seattle.

Remember that our potluck dinner now starts at 6:30pm. Bring a dish if you can! And please bring your own water bottle, mug, and plate if you're able, though we'll have spares on hand.

After dinner, stick around to learn more about our other campaigns, upcoming events, and ways to take action throughout the month. Did you resolve to do more in the fight for climate justice this year? We'll help turn your resolution into action!

You Make On the Media Possible

Support another year of On the Media

Dearest OTM friend,

It is the last day of On the Media for the year, and it's also the final hours of our December fundraising campaign. We can say with utter certainty that we'll be back in 2019, but you have a big impact on what that looks like.

Year-end giving is a vital part of our budget here at On the Media. Last week, we let you know that we needed 1,000 listeners to step up before the end of the year to set us up for success in 2019. We've had an incredible outpouring of support from over 700 listeners since then. You're the whole reason we make the show, so hearing from so many of you is amazing, but if you haven't given yet, we still need you to help reach that goal by midnight tonight.

Your support helps us figure out how we're going to pay for the year to come. Right now, your donation combined with the gifts of your fellow listeners will help us continue to bring you everything that is On the Media in 2019.
Support On the Media Before Midnight Tonight
The amount you can donate doesn't matter as much as the simple fact that you do. Knowing the community of listeners we serve is willing to step up, chip in and pay for the journalism they consume is essential to our future here.

So pick an amount that works for you right now and make your way to OntheMedia.org/donate. Do it by midnight and make On the Media part of your charitable giving in 2018.

Thank you!

The OTM Team

You and 999 other listeners

View this email in your browser
Dearest OTM friend,

This is the last Sunday of the year, and we have a special update for you.

It's an urgent one.

Last week, Bob put out a challenge - could we get you and 999 other listeners to step up for On the Media before December 31st? That's the number of new members we need to start strong in 2019 and to continue seeking nuance and context in our reporting.

We're so grateful for the incredible outpouring of support we've had
we've heard from over 600 listeners already, but we need to hear from you to hit that goal in the next two days.

The data shows us that just 1 out of every 100 people that listen become members. So when we ask for your help, it's very likely we're asking you. If you care about what you listen to week after week, will you help support it?

Support On The Media — Become a Member by Tomorrow at Midnight
When you and 999 other people give, what do we do with that money?

Your donation goes directly towards the very real costs of making the show. You provide the resources that it takes to get out of the studio, to get reporters on planes, to cover research, fact checking, gear. Your donation supports countless hours of production. But the most valuable thing we ask you to support is the incredible team that puts this show together every week.

This week we re-released "The Worst Thing We've Ever Done." Bob calls it the best thing we've ever done, and he wasn't alone. Listeners like you let us know how the reporting affected your lives:
  • "The Worst Thing We've Ever Done" was one of the most disturbing and riveting things I've listened to

  • "The Worst Thing We've Ever Done" changed my thinking

  • "The Worst Thing We've Ever Done" was amazing. I think that was the podcast that made me donate
And that is why we do this. We want to help you make connections that you might otherwise not have made. And bringing you depth and context in our reporting costs real money.

Join our challenge. Donate and become a member today to help us meet our goal of 1,000 new donors before tomorrow at midnight.

- The OTM Team

Almost there -- and check out our Year in Review video!

Dear Lorelei,

We have raised $2,035 toward our new $5,000 matching gift challenge goal. Can you chip in and help us get there by the end of 2018?

Thanks so much!

Val

P.S. Check out the Year in Review video below!

--

Dear Lorelei,

As the calendar year nears an end, it's a good time to look back at what we've accomplished over the last 12 months.

Year in review

Momentum for climate justice is building faster than ever -- whether it's the Green New Deal (finally) getting elected officials to talk about transformational climate policy, or the mainstream media (finally) talking about climate change on the evening news...something has shifted in the last month.

That's why I'm asking you to make a year-end donation to 350 Seattle.

75 people attended December's 350 Seattle meeting. It warms my heart to see new people joining the climate movement. We aspire to find a meaningful place for every single person who wants to engage in climate action. This is what makes us different from other climate and environmental groups -- if you're a musician, you can join our Artful Activism team. If you like public speaking, you can testify at a council meeting. If you're happiest working with data, you can join our Operations team. With over 30 active teams working on their own and in partnership with allied organizations and indigenous leaders across the region, we are keeping fossil fuels in the ground; advancing city, state, and federal climate policy; and challenging corporations like Amazon and Wall St. banks on their climate impacts.

This takes a lot of people power -- and some money, too.

Two donors are matching all donations (up to $5,000) until 12/31. We met our first matching gift challenge (thank you!) -- can you help us meet this second one?

So much is possible in 2019 -- let's start the year strong.
Val

Expiring soon: Re: Your donation doubled today

We need you and 649 more donors to reach our goal.

Dear Lorelei,

I needed to make sure you saw this.

With just days left in a crucial matching gift offer, we still haven't reached our $100,000 goal. We still need over 650 donors to have their gift doubled by midnight on the 31st so we can make our plans to fight the climate crisis in 2019 a reality.

We can't afford to give the fossil fuel industry a pass. Even after the UN's IPCC report gave us just ten years to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the Trump administration is paving the way for new drilling and coal plants — and just Friday they moved to weaken mercury pollution standards for coal-fired power plants1.

Please, have your tax-deductible gift doubled. Your gift will go twice as far in helping us halt more fossil fuel projects worldwide, organize thousands of activists, and support initiatives from fossil fuel divestment to passing the Green New Deal in 2019.

Thanks again,

Julie

I'm Julie, 350.org's Development Director. You haven't heard from me much in my seven years at 350.org, but I'm writing today because we haven't reached our year-end fundraising goal.

We need just 1,000 more donors to contribute or we won't reach our critical $100,000 matching gift goal to make our ambitious 2019 plans possible. I was checking our records, and we haven't seen a year-end donation from you yet.

Will you chip in a few dollars today to help us scale up our fight against the fossil fuel industry in 2019? Every bit will help, and your tax-deductible gift today will be doubled up to $100,000 thanks to a match provided by a generous donor.

Our entire approach is focused on people power. Whether it's cultivating local leaders to organize their communities to switch to 100% renewable energy, or taking to the streets to stop construction of a new pipeline – everything we do is about building up the power of the people.

This carries over to how we raise money, too. We rely on individual contributions to fund our grassroots campaigns, from the US to Japan. When we have your support, we can make the best, most strategic decisions for how we fight for the future of our climate and communities, not cater to the whims of special interests bent on keeping the status quo.

We have big plans for 2019, and with just 10 years left to dramatically change the course of our climate, we must raise the money we need today to act on our bold vision of stopping the fossil fuel industry in its tracks.

350.org's power has always been its grassroots support – people like you, who support us with their time, energy, and money. Thank you so much in advance for your support and generosity as we close out 2018 and head into our most ambitious year yet in the fight for climate justice.

Thank you,

Julie Hudson, Development Director

P.S. Remember that your donation today will be doubled until midnight, December 31st. Please give!

Special edition: 2018 in people power

Last Fossil Free News of the year looks back on amazing climate action

Fossil Free Digest

Dear Lorelei,

That's a wrap. For the final edition of Fossil Free News in 2018, I'm taking you back to some of the highlights of what we accomplished together in this impressive year of climate action. Below are 10 people-powered moments of 2018 that blew us away.

Many of you took action for the first time this year, and some have been in the movement for a while. We're all united by a determination to help stop climate change and build a Fossil Free world.

And as always, there are so many more inspiring stories of people taking action that I couldn't possibly fit in here. Pass on our wrap-up video to your friends to spread the inspiration:

Let's take a moment to be proud of everything we accomplished this year. I wish you all restful time with family, friends, neighbors over the new year, and we'll be back in 2019 for more.

Here's to you,
Nicole

In Case You Missed It

Here are the 2018 highlights. You can also flip through more incredible photos from the year on Flickr.

Local group Divest NY mobilized popular support for New York City to divest. The demand was front and center at a march to honor 5 years since Hurricane Sandy. Photo: Rae Breaux

1. New York divests. The year began with a big announcement from New York City – that it'd divest its $189-billion pension fund from fossil fuels, and take five of the most climate-wrecking fossil fuel companies in the world on in the courts. That set the stage for more major announcements later on in 2018, including divestment from the country of Ireland and France's investment arm the Caisse des depots et consignations.

2.  "No deal" in Brazil. In March in Rio de Janeiro, inside an auction for oil and gas blocks, no offers were made after activists from around the country delivered a powerful speech on the climate imperative. An equivalent 3.2 billion barrels of oil were left in the ground. The groups continue to target these auctions.

3. New Zealand bans fossil fuels. In April, years of campaigning from community, environmental groups, and iwi in New Zealand paid off when Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on all offshore oil and gas drilling. In November, it was passed into law.

4. Kinder Morgan, stopped. In Canada, incredible mobilization throughout the year culminated in the Federal Court of Appeal ruling to overturn government approval of Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline extension, which would pipe Alberta crude west for export through fragile ecosystems on the Pacific coast. Indigenous groups were leaders of the resistance, and thousands of you from around the globe sent in letters to Canadian embassies worldwide.

5.
Africa-wide day of action to DeCOALonise. On 25 May, coordinated action to Break Free from fossil fuels took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and 13 other countries across Africa. It launched an ongoing campaign to DeCOALonise Africa from fossil fuels and encourage a switch to renewable energy. More photos from the day around the African continent here

6. 100% renewable energy in Ukraine. Starting with the city of Zhotymyr in June, 2018 saw multiple cities in the Ukraine pass local resolutions to commit to 100% renewable energy. Kamianets-Podilskyi, Chortkiv and Lviv made similar announcements in September, and there are signs the trend is spreading in the wider region.

7. Virtual marches. In the Philippines and Turkey, people found ways to overcome tricky political contexts to push for climate action by sending their self-portraits in solidarity.

8. Rise for Climate on all 7 continents – including Antarctica. September 8 saw over 200,000 people worldwide come out for over 900 events demanding a Fossil Free world. See highlights from all over the world here and the United States roundup here

9. IPCC wake-up call. Scientists issued perhaps the most jarring report yet on climate in October showing that a world above 1.5˚C of warming means serious human costs. Inspired by the report, people sprung to action with creative and diverse tactics, from targeting their local MPs to holding local meetings to discuss the science and implications. Read about the weekend of action here.

10. Pacific leadership swells. Building on years of organizing and a recent tour in Australia to bring storytelling work to diaspora communities, 15 climate leaders from the Pacific islands called for an end to the creation of new coal mines as well as the expansion of existing ones. They joined and spoke at rallies to stop the Adani megamine in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Australia in December, where striking school students were in attendance. An example of interconnected movements coming together in a powerful way.

The Inside Story

This end-of-the year editorial brings in some intriguing movement theory (and numbers!) behind people power, and a vision for where we can be this time next year.

The One to Watch

And to finish, I invite you to watch and share the inspiring short video looking back on the year, and setting the stage for everything ahead.
