Lorelei,
The theme of last night's State of the Union was "Choosing Greatness" — but Trump used the speech to stoke fear and hate. He painted refugees and immigrants as enemies to be feared and mistreated, and celebrated America's record-breaking production of climate-wrecking oil and gas.
Choosing real greatness means moving forward, not back: away from Trump's lies and toward a future where all of us can thrive. That's exactly what a Green New Deal would build.
And right now, we have major momentum: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey are about to introduce resolutions to move a Green New Deal forward in the House and Senate — a powerful rebuke to Trump's message of fossil-fueled division and hate.
In her poignant response last night, Stacey Abrams called for real action on climate change, spoke of a country "made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls," and defended everyone's right to take part in our democracy.
That's what a Green New Deal is about: building a country where all of us — young or old, Black, white, or brown, straight or queer, rural or urban — enjoy the right to good jobs, a livable environment, and a just economy where all of us can thrive.
Real climate leadership means joining forces against Trump's xenophobic, fossil-fueled agenda. At this critical moment, we need all our representatives in Congress to follow the lead of champions like Ocasio-Cortez and Markey and fight for the Green New Deal we need.
We'll send an update when Ocasio-Cortez and Markey's resolutions are introduced — you'll be the first to know. For now, thanks for stepping up to take action in Washington this week. The Green New Deal is counting on you — and with your support, I believe we're going to win.
With resolve,
Katie
