December Newsletter

Lorelei --

It's cold. It's wet. We have only 12 years to turn the whole effing climate thing around. But you know what? There's some powerful new stuff getting ready to bust out in 2019, starting with the…

GREEN NEW DEAL

Heard about this? The Green New Deal resolution put forward by Alexandria Ocasio Cortez totally rocks! It creates a Congressional Select Committee that would develop a plan to transform our economy and society at the scale needed to stop the climate crisis. This is big stuff, people!

The Sunrise Movement supports the Green New Deal and we encourage you to support their actions. Here's two things you can do locally:

Monday, December 10, 3:30pm
Join Sunrise folks at Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's office to urge her to join the resolution. Meet the group at the 3rd Ave. Café, 1908 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle.

Thursday, December 13, 4:00pm
Live in the 9th Congressional District? We're asking Rep. Adam Smith to endorse the Resolution for a Select Committee on a Green New Deal, so join us in Renton, email Jared.

Other ways you can help:

  • Call these key Representatives.
  • Tweet at them too.
  • Call Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's office, urge her to join the resolution: 206-674-0040. (Ask her why Derek Kilmer signed on before she did!)
  • Reach out to Rep. Jayapal on social media: Facebook, Twitter.
  • Write letters to the editor to local papers about the resolution. The letters to the editor section is one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper, and politicians and their staff read it to track their constituents' concerns. The more letters submitted, the more likely one will get published, so pile on: Here's a letters to the editor template.
  • Ask your progressive organizations to endorse the resolution. Courtesy of Sunrise, here's information to send when asking for an endorsement.

Need to study up for your letter or social media post?

FOSSIL FREE KING COUNTY

Here's another thing: King County is actually poised to pass some kick-ass anti-fossil fuel legislation. Now, you can bet that fossil-fuel-loving utilities like Puget Sound Energy will do everything in their power to stop it, so we need your help to build a groundswell of community support that resonates more loudly than fossil fuel money.

Two things you can do right now:

  • Sign our petition calling on King County leaders to vote yes on the #FossilFreeKC ordinance and protect our healthy climate future.
  • Join us for our next action meeting!
    FossilFreeKC action meeting
    Thursday, December 13, 6:30pm
    1919 E. Prospect St., Seattle 98122

KALAMA METHANOL

You remember this toxic fracked-gas-to-methanol project: It would pollute as much as 1.2 million cars each year, poison the air with cancer-causing toxins, waste millions of gallons of freshwater from the Columbia River each day and risk explosions in an earthquake and spills from tankers bound overseas. It would derail our state's climate goals and devastate our orca and salmon populations. So, c'mon:

Speak up to stop the proposed world's largest methanol refinery!
Thursday, December 13, 5:00–9:00pm
Cowlitz County Event Center, 1900 7th Ave, Longview, WA 98632

We need your voice! Overwhelming community opposition defeated this terrible project when it was first proposed for Tacoma—submit your comment to stop it for good! And then join us for the last big public hearing in Longviewmore info, carpools and RSVP here.

WESTROCK PAPER MILL EXPANSION

Another big source of pollution and consumer of fracked gas in our region is the Westrock Paper Mill in the Tacoma Tideflats. They recently filed for their second expansion this year—which means there's a public hearing and comment opportunity.

WestRock Expansion Hearing
Monday, December 17, 5:00pm
Best Western Hotel, 2611 East E Street, Tacoma, WA 98421
More details here.
Can't make it in person? Attend the online webinar.

The project could increase greenhouse gases by about 60,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, equal to about 12,848 passenger vehicles driven for one year. In addition, local air pollutants that would increase as a result of the project include: particulate matter, lead, formaldehyde, benzene and toluene. Written public comments are being accepted through December 28.

TACOMA LNG

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) Comment Period
Thank you to everyone who showed up to the big hearing, sent in comments and shared on social media! We will likely hear back from the agency around February and another public comment period will follow.

The Puyallup Tribe, activists, community members, health professionals and scientists weren't the only ones that found major faults with the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)—other critics included the Attorney General's office and Department of Ecology. This article by Native Daily Network highlights comments found in a public records request, including the AG's office calling parts of the draft "fictional"Whoa!

Safety Concerns—New Analysis Needed
Although air emissions are receiving a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS), safety, health and other environmental concerns have not been properly studied. The city of Tacoma, as lead agency for the project, needs to put the interests of the public ahead of corporate cooperation. The Puyallup Tribe formally provided evidence to the city that an SEIS was needed. At a recent meeting, Mayor Woodards assured Puyallup Tribal Council that an independent company was hired to look at their evidence and make a recommendation by early January. Unfortunately, Braemar, the company hired, is anything but impartial—it's same firm consulted earlier in the year. This court testimony by Tarika Powell of Sightline Institute explains why they produced the "worst SEPA" report she's ever seen.

Please call Tacoma Mayor Woodards and City Manager Pauli to demand a new consulting agency be chosen in cooperation with the Puyallup Tribe. Please emphasize that community safety should be their main concern:

  • Mayor Victoria Woodards: (253) 594-7848
  • City Manager Elizabeth Pauli: (253) 591-5130

POWER PAST FRACKED GAS

350 Seattle is proud to be one of the founding members of a new coalition called Power Past Fracked Gas. As our fight to keep fossil fuels in the ground continues, "natural gas" or more appropriately named fracked gas, is poised to be the fuel most heavily promoted and greenwashed by industry. With your support, this coalition will see the same kinds of success as Stand Up to Oil and Power Past Coal! Help spread the word by liking us on social media, and then check out the website PowerPastFrackedGas.org.

STRONGER TOGETHER

Frontline Allies welcomes your participation in everything from organizing trainings on undoing racism and other oppressive systems, to supporting our allies in climate-related justice work. To join contact Kara; more information and links are available here. Our monthly meeting is one week early this month due to the holidays. Please join us Monday, December 10 at 7:00pm to hear more about our work and upcoming campaigns. RSVP to Kara for the address of a home in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood.

Undoing Racism: Our People Gonna Rise Workshop Series
Presented by the Mangrove Collective, these 6-hour workshops will create a safe space for difficult conversations as we come together and commit to ending racism in our climate justice work. The format will be a mix of short presentations of how oppressions (specifically racism) work and how individual experiences can intersect along axes of different oppressions; small group storytelling (longer times with opportunities for deeper sharing and deep listening); large group sharing (shorter and mostly of highlights from small group discussions); and time for individual creative reflection. To be put on the interest list and get notified when registration is open, email Kara. There will be one workshop per month in February, March, and April. Take one or take all three! It's designed as a series, so to get the most out of it, all three are encouraged.

SOLIDARITY WITH UNIST'OT'EN CAMP

The Unist'ot'en and their allies have been resisting all new pipelines in their traditional territory for many years. Recently, TransCanada has filed an injunction against members of the camp in their attempt to push a fracked gas pipeline through this territory, and there has been a call for support. This includes calls for fundraising, solidarity actions, and for people who are able to go to camp and stand against these fossil fuel companies. You can read this blog post from long-time camp supporter Andrew Eckels about the best way that you can show solidarity with the Unist'ot'en. And please note, if you do want to go to camp, it is Indigenous-led and you will be expected to follow protocol. You can find out more about what is expected of allies in camp here.

Local action: DefundDisaster
Surprise, surprise, the largest funder of TransCanada, the corporation busy violating the rights of the Unist'ot'en, is JPMorgan Chase. So, let's just say, um, we plan on paying them a visit sometime very soon. If you are a Chase customer and want to support the campaign to push Chase to stop funding extreme fossil fuels, please fill out this form. And whether you are a customer or not, please check out this excellent Bloomberg article about the campaign to get Chase to stop funding climate disaster.

LOOKING AT WHITENESS

The 350 Seattle Book Club is partnering with Breaking White Silence to start a Frontline Allies study group that will engage in depth with What Does it Mean to be White, by Robin DiAngelo. Barbara (350 Seattle Book Club) and Karen (Breaking White Silence) will co-facilitate, following Robin DiAngelo's curriculum. Tentatively scheduled to start Sunday, January 20 at 2:00pm, at a location to be determined based on feedback. We have some book copies for folks to borrow. Questions and RSVPs go to bookclub@350Seattle.org.

HELP STOP TRUMP'S CLIMATE KILLING NAFTA

On November 30th the United States, Mexico, and Canada signed what Trump calls the United States Mexico Canada Agreement but which we still call NAFTA, because it's the same, if not worse, than the original NAFTA. In the new year Congress will be voting on the deal, but in the meantime the U.S. International Trade Commission will publish a formal report on expected impacts from the proposed trade deal. This report will be used by Congress to make decisions about whether to vote yay or nay.

Join the Citizens' Trade Campaign in urging that the official report on NAFTA 2.0 highlight its failure to include critical changes needed to protect jobs, raise wages and promote healthy communities.

The new NAFTA fails to address climate change and contains special loopholes for the oil and gas industry that would allow fossil fuel projects to continue in Mexico unchecked. It also continues to allow US exports of fracked gas without Department of Energy review. And the deal fails to include enforceable labor and environmental standards.

WHAT'S YOUR CLIMATE PLAN, AMAZON?

Hey, a group of Amazon tech workers have filed a shareholder resolution that calls on the company to share its plans for reducing fossil fuel dependence! Are Amazon's plans to reduce fossil fuels big enough, bold enough, and fast enough? We deserve to know.

Sign this petition to support the workers and urge Amazon to adopt their climate plan resolution.

PEACEKEEPER TRAINING

Peacekeepers at demonstrations, marches, and actions help organizers to achieve their goals. Come learn and hone your skills at being alert to situations and intervening appropriately, de-escalation, and communicating with participants. In this interactive workshop we'll look at the role of peacekeepers, practice together, and examine the specific issues that a peacekeeper coordinator needs to think about. Whether you work with 350 Seattle and want to be an active participant for upcoming actions, or if you're planning on being in the streets on MLK Day or for the Women's March—come have fun and practice useful skills.

Suggested donation of $10-$50 but any amount is welcome, no one turned away for lack of funds. Space is limited, so register here today!

FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT OF WAY

Moving through the #SeattleSqueeze (aka the #JennyJam)
One month from Tuesday, the Alaskan Way Viaduct will close, leading to unprecedented traffic on downtown Seattle streets. A disaster for commuters, or a prime opportunity to move Seattle to the carbon-free transportation system it needs? We think the latter. Help us get the word out by following and retweeting @MASScoalition on Tuesday, December 11 as we announce key transit priorities for 2019 that will help move you through the #SeattleSqueeze, and all of us to a low-carbon future.

Data and code geeks needed!
We're trying to analyze bus delay data preceding and during the viaduct closure, and especially need people with GTFS (Google Transit Feed Specification) real-time experience to help us with that. We're also looking at King County Metro bus data more broadly to better advocate for service changes that will increase ridership, which has a clear and direct link to reducing GHGs. Contact Alice if you can help.

State legislative agenda
Cars and trucks continue to be the biggest source of carbon pollution not just for our city, but statewide. Legislators will consider several key transportation-related issues in the upcoming session, including bills regarding electric vehicles and "clean fuel" standards. We have an opportunity to make these bills better if we understand the issues and weigh in strongly now. To help research and lobby for sound transportation policy, contact Andrew.
